A journey through the history of rural Tilos
 2024-04-26 05:49:57

The lengthy text of an important inscription of this period from the Asklepiion of Kos states that Kosi judges intervened to settle some political crisis in Tilos and restore the democratic polity.

The inscription from the Asklepiion of Kos also commemorates the establishment of an oath for the citizens of Tilos over the age of eighteen to defend the democratic state. This story of the Republic in classical times is one of many that accompany the great finds which unfold the continuity of the history of the inhabitants of one of the smallest islands of the Dodecanese and which have found their place in the new Timeless Museum of Tilos . Between Rhodes and Kos, Tilos reveals its historical wealth in a modern, new bioclimatic building, with a total area of 798 square meters.

“The Museum’s exhibition runs through the entire history of the cultural character of the island and the visitor has the opportunity to tour the exhibition spaces and recognize the multi-level research that has been carried out at all stages of its implementation”, he describes to “ET”. the responsible retired archaeologist Erifuli Kaninia and guides us to the valuable newly established project on the island of the Dodecanese. The first visitor to the new Museum was Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, when he traveled to the island a few days ago, as Tilos is the first island in the world that, thanks to the “Just Go Zero Tilos” pilot program, has zero landfill waste and has received the certification ” Zero Waste Cities”. Mr. Mitsotakis characterized the new Timeless Archaeological Museum as a “very nice little museum-jewel”, “which also highlights the great cultural history of this very beautiful place”.

Finds from the Late Bronze Age and the Classical Period to Late Antiquity and the post-Byzantine years tell the story of life on the island. The works for the organization of the exhibition were carried out by the services of the YPPO, and in particular by the Service of Newer Monuments and Technical Works of the Dodecanese and the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Dodecanese.

Five sections

The exhibition is developed in five sections, which are structured in an equal number of rooms and cover a wide range of periods of habitation of the island, from the Late Bronze Age (1600-1500 BC), the Classical and Hellenistic Periods (1050 BC- 1st century AD), Late Antiquity, the Byzantine and Knightly Periods and the post-Byzantine years. Ceramic cups from the “Garipa” site, southwest of Megalo Chorio, dating to the earliest phase of the Late Bronze Age (1600-1500), vases of the same period from the “Lakkia” site, the inscription from the Asclepion of Kos with the oath of the Tilias of the 4th c. BC, which testifies to the intervention of Coen magistrates to settle some political crisis in Tilos to preserve the democracy, offerings from the tombs of the ancient necropolises and finds from casual investigations, tombstones and sculptures are just some of the exhibits of the Collection . Late Antiquity and the conversion to Christianity are represented by coins and architectural elements from the early Byzantine basilicas of the island, while the Byzantine, Knightly and Post-Byzantine Periods are represented by coins, ecclesiastical utensils and portable icons, on loan from the Holy Metropolis of Symi, Tilos, Halki and Kastellorizo, as well as a Muslim firman.

The goal is to be open all year round

Just six days ago, on April 18, the doors of the new Timeless Museum of Tilos were opened, following a multi-year effort and the support of agencies and services. The inspiration for its establishment was, already in the 70s, the public teacher Apostolos Logothetis, while the project was carried out following a donation of the plot by the Holy Diocese of Symi, Tilos, Chalkis and Kastellorizos in 2014 and the support of the Municipality of Tilos and the Region of South of the Aegean, which contributed to its inclusion in the co-financed NSRF program “South Aegean 2014-2020”.

It is noteworthy that many of the findings were collected and saved thanks to the old keeper of antiquities Pantelis Giannourakis. “Museums on the arid islands must operate in multiple directions of the cultural process, so as not only to strengthen the national consciousness of the inhabitants who remain, but also to be poles of economic development around the invaluable capital of the cultural heritage. The Museum was born, it must be properly maintained and continue to fulfill its purpose”, Ms. Kaninia describes us and points out that “our aim and hope is that the Museum remains open throughout the year and that there are staff”.
