The Departmental Federation of Hunters recalls that this highly transmissible disease from animal to animal, also called Aujezski’s disease, affects “mainly pigs and wild boars”.

A call for extreme caution. As indicated by the Haute-Saône Departmental Federation of Hunters in a message posted on Facebook on Thursday, a hunting dog died last December. According to this press release, he was contaminated by Aujeszki’s disease, also called “pseudo-rabies”, in the surroundings of the town of Luxeuil-les-Bains.

Precautions

According to hunters, this “highly contagious” disease concerns “mainly pigs and wild boars.” It “accidentally” affects carnivores and ruminants and is not transmissible to humans. It is transmitted from animal to animal with blood contact from a sick individual, or by ingestion of contaminated raw meat or offal.

This disease with a short incubation period, “2 to 6 days”, is expressed by symptoms similar to those of rabies: depression, worry, itching, paralysis, intense salivation or even respiratory problems. It can be fatal in less than a day once declared.

In order to avoid all risks, the department’s hunters indicate that contact between canines and wild boars, alive or dead, should be limited. In fact, it is also advisable, when emptying a slaughtered animal, to bury the remains of the animal and add lime to make them inaccessible to dogs.
