The Government of Antioquia, through a joint effort between Indeportes and the Housing Company of Antioquia (VIVA), has announced that Mari Leivis and her family will be given their own home, as a reward for their outstanding performance and dedication to sport.

The governor of Antioquia, Andrés Julián Rendón, expressed his enthusiasm and admiration for the athlete’s feat. “Much joy and congratulations to Mari Leivis Sánchez for everything that this effort has represented for her, today giving joy to Colombians, to the people of Antioquia,” said the governor.

The road to this recognition has not been easy for Mari Leivis. The athlete, originally from Turbo, in the Urabá region, Antioquia, began her career in weightlifting at the age of 13. Since then, she has demonstrated an unwavering dedication and strength that led her to stand out from her first years of competition.

His talent was quickly recognized, and he quickly joined the Colombian youth team, with which he won three silver medals at the U-17 World Cup. He has also won gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla 2018 and Valledupar 2022, and now, the silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

On Friday, August 9, 2024, during the weightlifting competition in Paris, Mari Leivis Sánchez managed to lift a total of 257 kilograms, distributed in 112 kg in the snatch and 145 kg in the clean and jerk. Her performance placed her in second place on the podium, beating her rival, Ecuadorian Angie Paola Palacios, by just one kilogram. This victory not only earned her the silver medal, but also a financial reward of 182 million pesos, awarded by the Colombian Olympic Committee.

In his announcement, Governor Rendón will extend to other Antioquian athletes who win medals at the 2027 National Games, who will also be able to aspire to receive their own home as part of the department’s stimulus programs.
