On July 31, 1991, seven Lithuanian officers were killed by Soviet snipers at the Medininkai border post near the border with Belarus: Mindaugas Balavakas, Algimantas Juozakas, Juozas Janonis, Algirdas Kazlauskas, Antanas Musteikis, Stanislaus Orlavičius. Ričardas Rabavičius died in the hospital on August 2 from gunshot wounds to the head.
Doctors managed to save the life of the only seriously injured customs officer, T. Šern.
Konstantinas Mihailov, a former OMON militiaman, was convicted and is serving a life sentence for the Medininkai massacre.
Three more rioters – Andrejs Laktionovs, Česlavs Mlyniks and Aleksandras Ryžovs – were sentenced to the harshest punishment in absentia by the Lithuanian courts, because Russia refuses to extradite them.
