What has been going on for a few days in Martinique? The current variant is Omicron. According to scientists, it is less dangerous, less virulent than the Delta variant which was dramatic in 2021 in Martinique. On the other hand, it is transmitted much more easily.
After the carnival, we had a big epidemic peak before a drop, and there for several weeks, we are once more on an increase. There was the lifting of barrier gestures, family or festive gatherings. All this helps to accelerate the transmission of the virus. And in the Omicron variant, there are sub-types…the B A5 sub-type settles in Martinique. It is he who is transmitted more easily than the first. This set can explain the current rise in the epidemic in Martinique. (…) We have an impact at the hospital. We see frail people arriving, especially people over 75, and people with chronic illnesses.
André Cabié, infectiologist at the CHUM
The epidemic is still progressing in Martinique while it is the opposite with our neighbors in Guadeloupe or Guyana, for example. “We don’t have clear data on this. It is possible that the B A5 subtype arrived rather in Martinique and that, we know that in other countries of the world, the arrival of this sub-variant has led to a significant epidemic rise… The investigations are in progress. Classes, assures André Cabié.
