When the war between the Jewish state and Hamas in Gaza began in October, fire was also exchanged across the border between Israel and Lebanon. This raised fears of a wider conflict.
Israel’s military said two soldiers were wounded and several others suffered minor injuries after its anti-missile defense shot down a pair of “suspicious aerial targets that came from Lebanon” in the western Galilee region.
“Two IDF (army) soldiers sustained moderate injuries, and several other soldiers suffered minor injuries from shrapnel and smoke inhalation,” the military said, adding that the soldiers were taken to hospital.
It is not clear from the military’s statement whether the soldiers were injured by falling debris or the drone strike.
Iran-backed Hezbollah, an ally of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, said it had directed attack drones at an Israeli military headquarters and claimed casualties in the morning attack.
In a separate statement, the group also said it had attacked Jal al-Alam, an Israeli outpost across the border from the Lebanese city of Nakura.
A source close to Hezbollah, speaking on condition of anonymity, previously told AFP that the group considered the Jal al-Alam outpost a key target because of Israeli surveillance equipment there.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported on Sunday strikes and bombings by Israel in several border areas.
The Israeli military said fighter jets carried out “a number of strikes against Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanese territory”.
More than 120 people have been killed on the Lebanese side of the border since the start of the Israeli-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip, mostly Hezbollah fighters, but also a dozen civilians, according to figures compiled by AFP.
Israel says six soldiers and four Jewish civilians were killed on its side in this area. The Lebanese army lost its first soldier in an exchange of strikes on Tuesday.
