For clumsily defending his captain, Dylan Larkin, Detroit Red Wings forward David Perron received a heavy six-game suspension on Monday.
It was expected that the Quebec veteran would receive exemplary punishment from the player safety department of the National Hockey League (NHL), since he was invited to explain himself in person, by videoconference.

Early in the game once morest the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, Larkin collapsed to the ground following contact with Mathieu Joseph and Parker Kelly. In the heart of the action, Perron saw red and attacked defender Artem Zub. He double-checked the Russian’s head, with the intention of causing an injury, the NHL ruled.
Immediately following his dangerous gesture, the Wings player was chased out of the game by the officials and his team had to take a five-minute penalty.
On Monday, Joseph commented on the matter, saying Larkin had been a victim of bad luck. For Perron, however, he was more categorical.
“I don’t think anyone really knew what was going on. Obviously it was a pretty high double-check to be honest. The League will take matters into its own hands. I’m just happy that Zub is doing well,” said the Chambly native.
At least a week
Perron will have to miss minimally until the December 22 game once morest the Philadelphia Flyers, but Larkin might also be sidelined for a while.
“Dylan is going on the injured list. We don’t have a duration, but it will keep him out for at least a week, head coach Derek Lalonde said Monday. I believe we will know more with time. I think following seeing him unconscious – a lot of things are going through our minds, including his history – to see him come off the ice with help and not on the stretcher was positive.”
“It’s unfortunate to lose a player of this caliber for a long period of time,” added the pilot regarding the captain, who has 25 points in 24 games this season.
Because of the loss of Larkin, but also those of JT Compher and Klim Kostin to injuries, the Wings had to turn to the American League for several emergency recalls. Zach Aston-Reese, Jonatan Berggren and Austin Czarnik, three forwards with experience in the Bettman circuit, made the trip to Grand Rapids.
