The European Forum Alpbach (EFA) is facing a change in leadership: Andreas Treichl, former long-time CEO of Erste Group, wants to step down as president. The EFA confirmed media reports to the APA on Friday. Treichl wanted to reposition the forum in terms of content and this has now been completed, the reason given for the withdrawal after only four years. Treichl proposed Othmar Karas, a long-time Alpbach expert, as his successor.
“He is one of the most convinced Europeans I know, he has an extraordinary network, knows how to bring the right people together and will not let anything deter him from shaping Europe so that it has an excellent future,” Treichl wrote on Friday in an EFA press release about his designated successor.
“It is an excellent time to step down from the presidency. We have renewed the forum in recent years and given it a stronger focus on content. I am sure that it will continue to play an important role as a think tank for Europe in the future,” Treichl continued. He would like to continue to advise the EFA. However, his focus is on the further development of the ERSTE Foundation, of which he is Chairman of the Supervisory Board.
A general assembly is to take place at the end of October, at which the president, vice presidents and board will be elected. The former vice president of the European Parliament and ÖVP politician Karas wants to throw his hat into the ring. “I have had a close connection with the European Forum Alpbach for over 40 years,” Karas explained his application to the APA. The EFA stands for “strong youth, intensive dialogue, new ideas and bright minds.” Now he wants to stand for election with a team of the members of the EFA and he thanked Treichl for his “personal trust”.
The mayor of the municipality of Alpbach, Markus Bischofer, has already been informed by Treichl of his resignation. He admitted to the APA that he was “surprised”. Now it is important to ensure a “seamless transition”.
Treichl had held the office of President of the Forum in the “Village of Thinkers” since autumn 2020, succeeding former EU Commissioner and ÖVP politician Franz Fischler, who was EFA President for eight years. The 72-year-old ex-banker wanted to set new priorities. This year’s forum, which ended just two weeks ago, was held under the general theme “Moments of Truth”.
