According to the Federal Ministry of Health, an estimated 16 to 20 out of 100 people in Germany will suffer from depression or chronic depressive mood, also known as dysthymia, at some point in their life. There are various risk factors that favor mental suffering. At the same time, other factors can counteract the risk of depressive moods, researchers from the Netherlands have found.

For her in the journal JAMA Psychiatry published study, data from 6980 people (1671 of them women) without symptoms of depression and without coronary artery disease were examined. The participants in the study belonged to the GAZEL cohort. This is a study in France to assess the risk of various chronic non-communicable diseases in adults. For the analysis, the participating men and women were examined for their heart health in the years 1990 to 1997. From 1997, the assessment of her depressive symptoms began. To do this, they filled out a questionnaire on depression every three years (until 2015).
