Automotive history is dotted with legendary models that have captured the imagination of car enthusiasts throughout the decades. Among these iconic models is the Mercedes 230 SL Pagode, a car that has left an indelible mark on the automotive world. Introduced in 1963, the 230 SL Pagode immediately won hearts with its elegant design, impressive performance and incomparable refinement. She turns 60 this year.
Mercedes 230 SL Pagode: perfect proportions
Succeeding the first two legendary SLs of the brand with the star (300 SL and 190 SL), the 230 SL Pagode was presented for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show on March 14, 1963, to be marketed a few weeks later, the same year. Perfectly proportioned with 4.28 meters in length, 1.76 meters in width and 1.29 meters in height, the car was neither too long nor too wide. On the scale, it weighed 1,295 kg and was capable of reaching 200 km/h, powered by a 2,306 cm3 6-cylinder in-line engine that developed 150 horsepower.
The first safety chassis sports car
The Mercedes 230 SL Pagode was designed to succeed the legendary 300 SL, which was renowned for its avant-garde design and exceptional performance. The 230 SL was intended to be a more affordable and practical car, while retaining the features that made its predecessor so successful. After the curves of the 1950s, the 230 SL ushered in a new era, that of more modern and stricter lines, with an optional hardtop overhanging narrow pillars.
From August 1963, the 230 SL Pagode won the Spa-Sofia-Liège rally, driven by Eugen Böhringer who covered the 5,500 km in 90 hours. Sign of excellent reliability.
It was also the first sports car in the world to be equipped with a secure chassis, consisting of front and rear crumple zones and a rigid cabin.
Why this name of “Pagoda”?
The design of the 230 SL Pagode was revolutionary for its time. Its nickname “Pagoda” was due to the unique shape of its rigid roof, which resembled the roofs of Asian temples. This roof was removable, allowing drivers to enjoy the joys of open-air driving whenever they wished. The 230 SL also featured flowing lines and sleek bodywork, which gave it an unmistakable presence on the road.
A speed of 200 km/h
Under the hood, the Mercedes 230 SL Pagode featured a 2.3-liter inline six-cylinder engine, capable of producing 150 horsepower. Combined with a four-speed manual transmission (or optional automatic), the engine allowed the car to reach impressive speeds for the time: 200 km/h. The 230 SL also featured four-wheel independent suspension, which improved handling and provided a more comfortable ride.
The SL enters the era of comfort
In addition to its performance, the Mercedes 230 SL Pagode also stood out for its luxurious and sophisticated interior. The cabin was finished with high quality materials, such as leather and fine wood, creating a refined and elegant ambience. The car was also equipped with many innovative features for the time, such as electric windows, a heating system and an AM/FM radio.
The popularity of Mercedes 230 SL Pagoda was immediate, with many sports car enthusiasts falling in love with its timeless beauty and impressive performance. Over the years the car has been improved and modified, with the introduction of more powerful versions and new features. In 1967, the 230 SL was replaced by the 250 SL (with more torque and an improved braking system), then by the 280 SL in 1968 (equipped with a 2.8 liter engine with a power of 170 horsepower ), who continued to perpetuate the legacy of the Pagoda.
Mercedes 230 SL “Pagode”: designed by a Frenchman
Between 1963 and 1967, its last year of production, the 230 SL sold 19,831 units (48,912 examples for the three Pagode models). Its fabulous design is the work of a Frenchman; designer Paul Bracq, who had also worked for Citroën, Bmw and Peugeot. A pencil stroke that quickly turned into a stroke of genius.
Today the Mercedes 230 SL Pagode has become a highly sought-following model by collectors and classic car enthusiasts. Its timeless design and status as an automotive icon make it a symbol of elegance and prestige. Well-maintained models in good condition can fetch high prices (see below) in the collector car market.
