The driver initially fled, but later turned himself in to the police and claimed that it was the protesters’ fault and that they had attacked him earlier and he had tried to speed away.
The incident happened during the monthly cycling event Bici Critica.
How did everything go?
On Thursday evening, in the Chamberi district of Madrid, a car driver obstructed five cyclists participating in a protest action. Cyclists took part in the monthly Bici Critica movement, OK Diario reports.
The incident happened around 10:00 p.m. One cyclist suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital. Other cyclists were slightly injured.
The driver, who initially left the scene, later presented himself at the Hortaleza police station of the Madrid Municipal Police. He has been identified and is currently being investigated for possible road safety offences. However, he was not arrested.
The driver was tested with a breathalyzer, but his test was negative. He filed a complaint against the bikers, alleging that they attacked him, his partner and damaged his car.
According to preliminary data, the incident did not occur because of the pro-Palestine position expressed during the protest.
What is Bici Critica?
Bici Critica Madrileña is the cycling community known as the “Critical Mass” of Madrid. They meet on the last Thursday of every month.
Their goal is to promote the bicycle as a friendly and alternative form of transport in the city. One of their slogans is “We don’t block traffic.” We are traffic.”
