Famous movie and music stars have worn them, while they have been featured in many fashion magazines.
They are in fact avant-garde creations and most of them large in volume, since as their creator explains, due to a rare disease that afflicts him, he has lost his delicate movements and skills and the large constructions are what make it easier for him.
Thessaloniki: Famous actors in his clientele
Despite the difficulties, however, the artist, in his workshop in the heart of Thessaloniki, works great and his jewelry makes a splash in Greece and abroad, having among his clientele Hollywood stars who wear his creations, whose identity he cannot reveal since he is bound by contracts he has signed with them.
Using aluminum exclusively, a material that is both recycled and easier to shape than other heavy metals – something that works for him, Mr. Moralis makes rings, necklaces and elaborate head jewelry.
Speaking to the Athens/Macedonian News Agency, he explains how he managed to realize his dream and not let his health problem (Wilson’s disease, an inherited autosomal recessive genetic disorder in which copper builds up in the tissues) stop him from entering on the list of creators of high aesthetic and even avant-garde jewelry.
“Because of my illness I finished high school at a very old age. I was 38 years old when I went to university, to the (School of) Fine Arts. My first contact with the field came earlier, when I went to OAED as I did not pass the high school classes and there I attended jewelry making classes. For me it was the beginning, the first step, contact and love for this art. When I was diagnosed with the disease and there were many problems, mainly mobility, I had to decide either all or nothing, so I chose not to leave construction but to give my whole self there. The illness deprived me of the right to work earlier, but better late than never,” says Mr. Moralis.
His jewelry is elaborate and refers to various eras of Greek cultural heritage, while bearing the designer’s imprint and his message that effort should not stop in the face of any obstacle. After all, this is what he thinks every time he gets his hands on the material to make rings, head ornaments and all sorts of other jewelry. In fact, he makes everything with just three pliers and his hands, since he cannot use many tools and machines and the result in his modest space is impressive.
America, Australia, Portugal, Spain, France are some of the countries where his jewelry has already been found in fashion shows on major catwalks or prominently in the windows of well-known fashion houses. Proud, as he declares, he has his new collection ready, with which he will participate in Athens, at the jewelry exhibition, in the next few days (from February 24 to 26), among 50 designers.
His new collection is called “Folds” and is inspired by ancient Greece, by the tunics and hairstyles of the time. “I want to send a message of inclusion: we can all do it! We, the people who have problems, there is no reason to stay on the sidelines. It was not easy what I did and still do today, but making my jewelry is refreshing, it fills me with courage, with creativity and it feeds me with strength and passion. There are many people who see my jewelry and are surprised when they learn that it is made by someone with my own health problems and mobility problems, and they are also surprised by the degree of difficulty with which they are made,” he notes.
