The Canadiens’ defensemen had a lot to say in Tuesday night’s stunning win over the Devils.
Of the five goals scored by the Montreal team in the triumph, three were the work of defenders.
One of them was entered by Quebecer Mike Matheson. It was scored in an empty net, sure, but it capped a night of over 27 minutes for the Pointe-Claire native who, following being plagued by injuries in the first half of the season, is showing what wood it has been warming for a few weeks.
And casually, the fluid skater, acquired from the Penguins last summer in return for Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling, is now at 14 points in 23 games with CH.
“This Matheson, the more I see him play, the more I love him,” former NHL coach Michel Bergeron said on Wednesday during his “Sans Filet” column.
“He is involved, he is fast and in defensive situations, he is never bypassed,” he added, then underlining the “good vision of the game” of the 28-year-old Montrealer.
The ineffable “Bergy” remains overthrown that the general manager of the CH, Kent Hughes, was able to obtain Matheson in return for Petry, that he does not carry his heart.
“Good riddance!” he said of the former Habs defender.
“And I’m told that in Pittsburgh now Petry is in the deal market,” he exclaimed. So it was a good transaction for the Canadian.
In addition to praising Matheson’s efforts, the analyst was also complimentary of Josh Anderson, Rafaël Harvey-Pinard and goalkeeper Samuel Montembeault.
