Don’t look for an electric cargo bike or scooter: the 30 that had been made available were taken by storm. But they will be available once more in a year, when the tenants will have returned their machine rolling following having tested it. Since May, residents of the Bordeaux metropolitan area have been able to rent an electrically assisted bicycle for one year, the maximum duration of this new form of long-term rental deployed by TBM.

Creation of new lianas, better evening and night offer, reinforced connections between the two banks of the Garonne, optimized tramway, new bicycles… Bordeaux Métropole and Keolis announced on Thursday 20 April major changes to meet environmental and social challenges and economical

Called Vélo’c, this service actually combines two formulas. The free loan of classic bicycles for ten months or of electric, cargo or special bicycles for two months has already existed for around ten years with more than 3,000 bicycles available for hire. It’s a rolling business, since around 2,200 bikes and nearly 200 electric bikes are loaned out every month. Students represent a large proportion of users. They are 700 to use this service now well established in the landscape of alternative modes of travel to the car.

Diversify uses

Thus a new form of rental was born in the spring: long-term rental for twelve months of an electric bike or a cargo bike, with a service offered following six months of use. “We wanted to strengthen the bike rental offer, says Marie Lalire, director of bicycles and alternative modes at Keolis Bordeaux Métropole Mobilités. The objective is obviously to multiply the possibilities of using the bicycle in the metropolis, and to reach a wider public. »

“The goal with this new service is above all to allow residents of the outskirts to move around more easily”

The proof with the cargo bikes having quickly found an echo among families, who, to avoid a significant investment (the first prices start at 2,000 euros) preferred the subscription at 32 euros per month. But the long-term rental of “simple” electric bicycles also aims to attract, in the metropolis, those whose place of residence or work is not necessarily well connected to the public transport network, those who were hesitant to carry out slightly too long journeys on a muscle bike, or even the elderly.

“It’s still too early to have feedback on the types of use, but these are surveys that will be interesting to conduct when we have a little perspective,” says Marie Lalire. The goal with this new service is above all to allow the inhabitants of the periphery to move around more easily. »

Latest generation bikes

In total, 1,000 latest generation electric bikes are offered for 25 euros per month, or 300 euros per year. At the end of July, 326 electric bicycles were already rented. Especially since TBM tries to facilitate the procedure: all you have to do is go to the Maison des mobilités cours Pasteur in Bordeaux, register on infotbm.com or connect to the Le Vélo par TBM application. Once the option has been chosen and the documents to be provided have been sent (identity document, proof of residence and bank details), you can very well pick up your Pasteur course bike. But, new from September, a mobile shop, which will travel to all the municipalities of the metropolis, will even deliver the bike to your home.
