A new giant in the production of electric batteries
It is an impressive spectacle that opens to the eyes of the curious in the North of France: a gigantic factory. Indeed, its dimensions rival those of six football pitches. This temple of innovation was born from the colossal investment of two billion euros, accompanied by the State. So, this gigafactory is the work of the Franco-German-Italian collaboration under the name ofACC (Automotive Cells Company), a symbol of a greener energy future. Its niche: the production of electric batteries.
The mission of this colossus of industry? Make Europe less dependent on Asia. Especially from China, for battery technologies. In any case, this is the bet of the government. Proof of the strategic importance of the project, Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy, and his counterparts from Industry and Energy Transition will be present at the inauguration of this temple of high technology.
Reindustrialization strategy and vision for the future
This gigafactory is no coincidence. Indeed, it is the realization of a strategic vision initiated five years ago. The government wishes with this major project to reindustrialize the northern region. But above all: create a new industrial sector around the battery. The goal? Preparing for the automotive industry’s inevitable transition to electric. A necessity imposed by the scheduled end of combustion engines in Europe by 2035.
The ACC factory in Billy-Berclau is the embodiment of this ambition. Thus, with a capacity of 15 GWh, expandable to 40 GWh, this gigafactory might equip between 300,000 and 500,000 electric cars per year. This is enough to calmly consider the future of green mobility. Thus, it marks the advent of a new era, that of electric batteries “made in Europe”. The challenge remains to create a European Airbus for the sector!
