Since the age of 15, Hussein bin Al Abdallah has been the heir to the throne of Jordan. It is notable to mention that he is a direct descendant, in the 42nd generation, of the Prophet Muhammad. Hussein bin Al Abdullah will become the fifth king of Jordan and will bear the same name as his grandfather, King Hussein I, who was the first Jordanian monarch with that name.

Despite being the eldest son of King Hussein I, Prince Abdullah did not expect to ascend to the throne. Initially, the king had designated his younger brother, Prince Hassan bin Talal, as heir designate in 1965.

However, shortly before his death, on February 7, 1999, the king changed his mind and named his son as his successor. Once the prince ascended the throne, he designated his younger half-brother, Prince Hamzah bin Al Hussein, as heir-designate upon his ascension.

However, on November 28, 2004, King Abdullah II of Jordan withdrew the crown prince title from Prince Hamzah bin Al Hussein. In this way, the title of crown prince was left vacant, the Constitution of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan establishes that the agnatic primogeniture determines that the eldest son of the monarch is automatically the first in the line of succession to the throne, unless otherwise decided .

Therefore, once his half-uncle lost his status, Hussein became crown prince, as was widely expected. The formal title of crown prince was conferred on July 2, 2009 by royal decree, which took effect immediately.

“Hussein was my first joy, my first child. Like any mother, I have long dreamed of his wedding day,” Queen Rania said in a speech.

Unlike the role of the King, the crown prince primarily has a ceremonial function as set out in the Constitution, and his title is not associated with any political office. From an early age, Hussein has played an increasingly active role representing his and Jordan’s father.

In June 2010, he made his first official engagement representing his father at the Arab Rebellion anniversary and Armed Forces Day celebrations. Over the years, she accompanied his father on official and military missions, and assumed the role of Jordan’s Prince Regent on several occasions during the King’s absences in the country.

In 2013, he participated in a training session with the elite Jordanian special forces members of the 71st Special Battalion. In July 2014, she visited the King Hussein Medical Center in Amman, where medical care was being provided to wounded Palestinians who had fled the Gaza Strip.

Highlighting his commitment to international issues, Prince Hussein, at the age of 20, became the youngest person to chair a United Nations Security Council session in April 2015. During this meeting, he led a debate on methods to prevent the radicalization of young people and their incorporation into extremist groups.

In May 2017, he delivered a welcome address during a session of the World Economic Forum that took place on the Jordanian shores of the Dead Sea.

Following his studies at Sandhurst, Prince Hussein, who currently holds the rank of captain in the Jordanian Armed Forces, earned his BA in International History from Georgetown University in the United States.

Coincidentally, his future wife also graduated from the United States, where she completed her higher education. The 28-year-old herself received her high school education in Saudi Arabia before moving to New York to study at Syracuse University’s College of Architecture.
