A friend and an impeccable man passed away…Goalkeeper Rittich remembers Gaudreau

The horrific news was circulating on social media even before official confirmation. Where did she find you?

Yesterday I was at the gym and a friend came over and asked me if I had read the book. This resonated with me a lot. It wasn’t confirmed at the time and I hoped it wouldn’t be. But unfortunately. At thirty-one, a perfect man, husband, father of the family, and a wonderful human being passed away.

Gaudreau’s last game at the World Cup in Prague was against the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals. Is there any chance you can meet here in May?

I wasn’t at home then. The last time I saw Johnny was when I played against him in the NHL.

By the time you established yourself in Calgary in 2017, Gaudreau had already been there for two or three seasons, during which time he immediately became a key player in the Flames’ offense. Do you remember how he accepted you into the team?

During those four years, I more or less sat next to him in the cabin. We stay in touch every day. I will only remember him in good ways. He’s always funny and he doesn’t spoil any jokes. An impeccable person.

With a year difference in age, you must have a lot to discuss.

This is very difficult to talk about. Your friend will die inexplicably, knocked over by some drunk idiot. This is a terrible tragedy for this family.

Do you know Brother Matthew too?

I may have met him, but I’m not sure. But I knew Johnny’s dad’s wife. Children were born while we were already playing elsewhere. The fact that this father of two died makes me absolutely sick.

How will Gaudreau be remembered as a hockey player?

These little guys tend to be very skilled, and Johnny is one of the best. I remember many unique things about him. A very creative and fast player. He likes to throw to catchers from unusual angles. Goalkeepers have a hard time with him.

That shot that was popular when you were together was when Gaudreau had just received the pass and was about to escape single-handedly, but you were already in the goal area with your hands raised to celebrate the decisive shot. do you remember

Of course. Scored 3:2 against Colorado. I just trusted him with that, and it will be one of my strongest memories of him.

When you were playing in Canada, you spoke passionately about the duo of Johnny and Mona (Sean Monaghan). You may not have experienced game chemistry like this before.

He entered the NHL with the same plus-minus as Money. They even live together and are very good friends. Years later, they should now meet as teammates in Columbus. But unfortunately, that won’t happen anymore.

Two years ago, Gaudreau unexpectedly signed a long-term, seven-season contract with the Blue Jackets despite interest from half the NHL’s clubs. Did you know he was planning something like this?

I suspect he wants to visit relatives in the United States. I thought Philadelphia or New Jersey would be closer to home. But then I wonder what the hell happened there and why he chose Columbus.
