A foreign cartoon was miraculously seen in the USSR: this is what the censors missed

The students didn’t even know regarding it.

In Soviet times, foreign cartoons were rarely broadcast on screens, and especially those produced in capitalist countries. The exception was the Australian series Around the World in 80 Days, which was shown in the early 80s. But not everything is as simple with this cartoon as it might seem.

Each episode started with the same song. The last line, “To marry Belinda Mays, Passepartout!” Soviet schoolchildren sang especially often. But they did not understand that this composition contained a blatant obscenity. Only English-speaking guys might guess regarding it.

Composer John Sangster, who created the music for the cartoon, took the melody of a World War I soldier’s song and used it for the soundtrack. The original contained obscene jokes and ridicule that can shock an impressionable listener with their rudeness. However, the Soviet censors did not pay any attention to this, perhaps out of their own ignorance, and allowed the cartoon to reach the screens.
