ALGIERS – The general director of the National Passenger Maritime Transport Company (ENTMV), Abdelhakim Bouzaher reported, Wednesday in Algiers, a forecast increase of 18% in the number of travelers on board the company’s fleet during the next summer season, with 243,000 travelers expected compared to 206,000 travelers registered during the summer of 2023.

These figures were presented during a hearing session before the Transport and Telecommunications Commission of the National People’s Assembly (APN), chaired by Kamel Laouissat, president of the commission.

ENMTV expects an increase in the number of travelers on its ferryboats of around 63,900 passengers during the summer of 2024, in addition to an increase of 19% in the number of vehicles transported, Mr. Bouzaher said in his presentation.

The number of scheduled crossings should reach 292, an increase of 49 crossings compared to 243 recorded last summer.

The ENMTV which has four (4) ferry boats will have to charter another boat in order to strengthen these transport capacities from next February, according to Mr. Bouzaher who specified that the capacity of the vessel is 1650 beds and nearly 450 vehicles.

The fleet of the national company (four large ferry boats and two small pleasure boats), will be subject to periodic maintenance or renovation, in anticipation of the summer season, according to the same manager, who insisted on the guarantee passenger safety through strengthening the company’s human resources.

On the other hand, the official reported the upcoming creation of two pilot ticket sales agencies, one in Oran and the other in Algiers.

For his part, the president of the Transport and Telecommunications Commission at the National People’s Assembly (APN) affirmed that the promotion of maritime passenger transport is “a major challenge” taken up by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to promote the national transport system, which constitutes, according to him, “a sine qua non condition for a national economy which relies in its organization and its activity on modern international standards”.
