A Flemish alderman mowed down by a car in Meulebeke has died

Jacques Goemaere, Alderman for Culture and Education in Oostrozebeke (West Flanders) died Friday evening from injuries he had suffered since a traffic accident in June, the Kortrijk prosecutor’s office announced on Saturday. The alderman had been hit while riding his bicycle.

The accident took place on Thursday June 16 around 4.30 p.m. along the Steenovenstraat in Meulebeke. The victim had been hit by a car while trying to cross the street. The alderman was taken to hospital in serious condition. The parquet evokes a “unfortunate accident“, the speed of the motorist not being to blame according to a witness.

Jacques Goemaere finally died following several weeks in a coma. He was in charge of Culture, Education, Housing, Markets, Cemeteries, Social Action and Social Housing since 2018. His powers have been redistributed among the other aldermen of Oostrozebeke.
