A first case of monkeypox in the population of Nova Scotia

HALIFAX — Nova Scotia is reporting its first case of monkeypox involving a resident of the province.

The Department of Health said Tuesday the person contracted the virus while traveling outside of Nova Scotia and showed symptoms upon returning.

Authorities say public health is following the case closely and has identified a low-risk contact.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Robert Strang said in a statement that the risk of public exposure remains low.

Nova Scotia says it is working with the federal government to receive more supplies of the Imvamune vaccine, which helps protect once morest the virus.

The province reported in late July that two cases of monkeypox had been identified locally, but involved people who are not from Nova Scotia.

This dispatch was produced with the financial assistance of the Meta Exchanges and The Canadian Press for the news.
