Mexico announced the first case of monkeypox on Saturday.
Deputy Health Minister Hugo López-Gatell said in a tweet: “A 50-year-old man, permanently residing in the US city of New York, was most likely infected during his stay in the Netherlands “.
“His condition is stable, he is in administrative isolation and is receiving treatment in Mexico City,” added López-Gatell.
The Mexican official also claimed that “the emerging virus has a slight infection rate and the likelihood of spreading as a pandemic is low.”
The World Health Organization announced on Friday that 244 cases of monkeypox had been reported recently, including 160 confirmed cases and 184 suspected cases, in more than 20 countries where the virus does not usually circulate.
Symptoms of the disease appear as fever, swollen lymph nodes and muscle aches, with signs of fatigue, chills and a rash, similar to chickenpox, on the hands and face.
Monkeypox is a disease that is transmitted from animals to humans. It was first discovered in 1958, in laboratory monkeys, hence the name of the disease.
