A resident died born in 1951. The fire started in a room on the second floor of a rear building. The smoke detector went off while the couch in the bedroom was on fire.
Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters found the occupant unconscious in his bed. He seemed to have inhaled smoke in his sleep. They evacuated him and tried in vain to resuscitate him.
The fire, which started accidentally, was quickly brought under control by firefighters. The room from which the fire started is uninhabitable, as is an adjoining room whose wall has been damaged.
The nursing home did not have to be evacuated and remains fully functional.
