Flames engulfed the Al-Ahram studio in Cairo’s Giza district, destroying everything inside and spreading to three surrounding buildings. They were evacuated before the fire reached them.
At dawn on Saturday, residents of neighboring buildings were still sleeping on the ground in nearby streets, an AFP journalist reported.
Accidents due to non-compliance with fire safety regulations are not uncommon in Egypt, and such incidents often claim lives.
In this case, security sources said there were no casualties, although some people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
Local media reported that the fire broke out a day following filming for one of the TV series ended. The Muslim holy month of fasting, Ramadan, which began last Monday, is seeing record highs in Egypt and across the Arab world.
According to security sources, the cause of the fire is still unknown and it took firefighters more than six hours to put it out.
Yusif Mohammed, who witnessed the fire and lives nearby, told AFP that the flames had already “reached the surrounding buildings when the fire engines arrived”.
According to him, “no one knows what really happened.”
27 thousand sq. m area studio “Al-Ahram” was founded in 1944, it has three sites, a cinema hall and an editing room.
Many Egyptian films and TV series have been made here.
In the 1960s, Egypt was the third largest film producer in the world. Today, Egypt, in the midst of the worst economic crisis in its history, produces three-quarters of the Arab world’s film production.
