Saturday evening, around 9.30 p.m., the Brussels firefighters intervened for a fire in a rest and care home located rue Ferdinand Elbers, in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean. The fire had broken out in a bedroom on the first floor. Unfortunately, it was already too late for the firefighters, an occupant of the room was found dead in his bed. His roommate was found unresponsive. Resuscitated at the scene, he was rushed to hospital.
Equipped with fire doors, the evacuation of the home was avoided. A PMA (Advanced Medical Post) has been installed by the Red Cross in the establishment itself. 22 residents were examined and treated on site by the medical teams on site.
After ventilation and verification, everyone was able to return to the rooms. “The origin of the fire is probably accidental, but remains to be determined, informs Walter Derieuw, the spokesperson for the Brussels fire brigade. Four pumpers and two self-ladders were engaged on site. SMUR teams from the Military Hospital, Erasmus and Schaerbeek were hard at work, as well as the Red Cross for logistical support and several 112 ambulances from the fire brigade. (…) Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim.”
The mayor of Molenbeek Catherine Moureaux went there.
