The court forced the company “Canal”, affiliated with American star Robert De Niro, to pay $1.2 million to a former employee, due to allegations of gender discrimination and bullying.

The jury’s decision comes following a years-long legal battle between the famous actor and his former assistant, Graham Chase Robinson, which was sparked by the latter’s resignation, according to what was reported by the BBC website.

Robinson had filed a lawsuit, demanding that De Niro’s company pay $12 million, alleging that she was abused, humiliated, underpaid and treated like De Niro’s “office wife” during her tenure.

During the investigations, it was found that Robinson was employed as a personal assistant to the famous actor in 2008, and was included in the company’s payroll for 11 years, and was given a job promotion to become Vice President of Production and Finance in the company.

For his part, De Niro insisted that he never insulted Robinson, admitting that he was in a bad mood sometimes, while the jury found that the actor was not personally responsible in the civil trial.

DeNiro’s company, Canal, filed a lawsuit demanding Robinson pay $6 million, charging her with misusing office funds, stealing company funds, and transferring more than $450,000 in aviation funds to her personal account.

But following eight days of testimony and five hours of deliberations on the dueling claims, the jury did not find Robinson liable for any Canal financial misconduct claims.

Although De Niro was not present in the courtroom when the verdict was issued yesterday, Thursday, Robinson was seen smiling and hugging her lawyer following the jurors left the room, according to the Associated Press.
