At the opening of the Salzkammergut Festival on Thursday in the Gmunden City Theater, cultural advisor Andreas Hecht (ÖVP) promised air conditioning. However, only for the coming year, this time the audience was still sweating horizontally because of the sweltering heat in the venerable room. In this respect, the event turned into a festival in three infusions: welcome speeches, Fritz Karl’s reading of Stefan Zweig’s texts and music (Maria Ehmer, Anna Knopp/each violin, Milan Milojicic/viola, Leonhard Roczek/cello).

“Art washes the dust of everyday life from the soul – its secret lies in the fact that one does not seek, but finds.” With this quote from Pablo Picasso, the commercial director of the festival, Johanna Mitterbauer, started the process of finding the 37th game season at Lake Traunsee.

When the 43-year-old took over the economic management of the cultural company in 2019, the festival budget was around 400,000 euros. “We’ve now reached 1.2 million euros, a third of which comes from ticket sales,” says Mitterbauer. She is concerned with gentle growth, under the premise of getting more young people away from digital devices year following year and seducing them into art.

It is also fortunate that the former director of the Burgtheater, Karin Bergmann, has been working here for the second summer as the person responsible for literature and drama premiere at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt. Claus Peymann, Hermann Beil, Birgit Minichmayr and Mavie Hörbiger have also been announced with readings.

The artistic manager Christian Hieke was excused, he celebrated his daughter’s graduation. In a video, he celebrated, among other things, the engagement of Thomas Quasthoff, Nikolaus Habjan’s version of “Die Schöne Müllerin” with Musicbanda Franui and the Summer Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic. Musical focus this year: Hugo Wolf.
The fact that the musical quartet missed the performance of Wolf’s “Italian Serenade” following reading Klemens Renoldner’s text “Stefan Zweig und die Musik” and only handed it in later following Zweig’s “The Secret of Artistic Creation” was concealed by Fritz Karl with light-footed wit. The musicians were sweating more than everyone else at that moment.
