A fascinating ending, but Cercle Brugge and Standard divide the points in a particularly mediocre match

Cercle Brugge and Standard shared the points in a particularly poor match. They each scored once from a corner kick, but didn’t make much progress with a point.

Cercle Brugge only took one point following a strong match once morest Genk, while Standard suffered a painful home defeat once morest bottom-of-the-table KV Kortrijk. They were both looking for their first win in 2024.

As usual, the home team started very aggressively, but that did not last long. After regarding ten minutes there was the best chance of the first half, Warleson had to keep Fossey’s volley out of his goal.

There was no follow-up, there was a lot of waste in the game of both teams. Ten minutes before half-time, Cercle received a penalty following Noubi made contact with Denkey. The VAR looked at it once more and saw that the contact happened just outside the box. So no penalty.

The venom is in the tail

Improvement did not seem to be on the way quickly in the second half, although there were still some chances. Bodart had to save attempts from Utkus and Van der Bruggen from the bottom corner, Standard had difficulty reaching Cercle’s sixteen.

Ten minutes before the end, the Rouches scored following all. Cercle just gave away a corner kick and that hurt them badly. Kanga headed through at the near post, Fossey worked the ball in via the underside of the crossbar.

Five minutes before the end, Thibo Somers leveled the signs once more. The captain headed in a corner kick from Lemarechal and saved a point, but that did not help either team.
