It is known that taking vitamins in moderation contributes to maintaining a person’s health, but it seems that there are other benefits that we can reap from nutritional supplements related to preventing serious diseases, or at least reducing the risk of developing them.

According to Britain’s National Cancer Institute, colon cancer rates have doubled among adults under 50 since the 1990s, but a moderate intake of vitamin D appears to have a significant association with a lower risk of early colon cancer, according to verywellhealth.

Vitamin D is a steroid hormone whose main function is to regulate bone metabolism, but with many other physiological functions, such as anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antiangiogenic effects, likely to act as an inhibitor of carcinogenesis.

A new study published in the Journal of Gastroenterology revealed that increased levels of vitamin D can help prevent colon cancer in adults under the age of 50.

Researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute found vitamin D’s benefits and effect on cancer following analyzing data from 94,205 women enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study II. They were particularly interested in finding an association between vitamin D intake and early colon cancer, which was diagnosed before the age of 50.

The researchers confirmed: “Vitamin D reduces the incidence of colon cancer and prevents tumor formation in several genetic models of bowel cancer, as it inhibits the growth of cancer cells.”
