After finally authorizing emulators on the App Store under regulatory pressure, Apple removed iGBA, the first Game Boy Advance emulator on iPhone, last weekend.
Long banned from plate-forme d’Apple, the first Game Boy emulator for iPhone made a sensational but very brief appearance on the App Store last week. Called iGBA, this software theoretically allowed nostalgic fans to dive back into the nuggets of Nintendo’s famous portable game. Alas, only 48 hours following its launch, the application was removed from the in-house application store.
An illegal copy unmasked
The reason ? The iGBA emulator was actually just a plagiarism shameless open source code GBA4iOSa project developed in the purest tradition “ fan » by the programmer Riley Testut. When the latter noticed that his work had been misused in a purely commercial context, he might only denounce the deception to Apple.
Initially, the apple brand had simply mentioned reasons of “ spam and copyright infringement » to justify the withdrawal of iGBA. But when questioned by the specialized press, she ended up admitting that the real problem was this blatant plagiarism of the GBA4iOS code.
Green light for emulation, but…
The crossover around iGBA not only made it possible to disentangle fact from fiction. It also led Apple to clarify definitely its position on retro console emulators in general. And good news, their development and distribution via the App Store are indeed authorized !
There remains one major subtlety: to obtain the approval of the Cupertino company, these applications must in no case promote or facilitate video game piracy practices, which remain illegal. Zealous developers have been warned.
The way is now open for a next wave of legitimate emulators on the home app store. Among them, GBA4iOS should logically hold the lead, provided that it takes care of its entry so as not to experience a fate similar to that of iGBA.
First steps taken in good humor
Despite this incredible episode, to say the least, the authorization in principle of emulators marks a great progress for the community of mobile gamers. Let’s hope that these somewhat chaotic beginnings are only the warm-up for a series of successful launches in the coming weeks.
As the saying goes, it is often through error that the truth emerges. Let’s hope that Apple will now apply its new course of action with discernment, to the delight of nostalgic gamers in search of retrogaming.
