Brussels – European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced that he called an emergency meeting of EU ministers on Tuesday following the attack launched by Iran on Israel last night.
The attack came in response to Israel’s bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus at the beginning of this month, which led to the killing of senior officers in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
“Following the Iranian attacks on Israel, I called for an emergency meeting of European Union foreign ministers on Tuesday,” Borrell wrote on Sunday on the X platform.
He added, “Our goal is to contribute to containing the escalation and (ensuring) the security of the region.”
He continued, “The European Union condemns in the strongest terms the Iranian attack with drones and missiles on Israel. “This is an unprecedented escalation and a threat to regional security.”
He pointed out that the European Union renews its commitment to Israel’s security. He said that in this tense regional situation, any new escalation cannot be in anyone’s interest. He called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint.
In the same context, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, “We will do our best to stop further escalation.” We can only warn everyone, especially Iran, once morest continuing like this.”
Last night, Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel, an unprecedented direct attack that was thwarted according to the Israeli army.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that “the process of responding to Israel has ended,” but stressed that his country reserves the right to act “more decisively” in the event of an Israeli “attack.”
