A statement from one of the agencies said the ship was linked to Israel.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place off the coast of India.
A fire broke out on the ship after the drone strike, according to the UKMTO, the British military’s maritime trade operations agency, and the British maritime security company Ambrey. The latter added that the chemical tanker attacked under the Liberian flag was linked to Israel.
Ambrey said the vessel was traveling from Saudi Arabia to India and that the Indian Navy was responding to the incident.
Both agencies said the attack took place 200 nautical miles southwest of Veraval in India. According to UKMTO, the fire has been extinguished and an investigation is underway.
The attack follows a series of drone and missile attacks by Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, a vital shipping lane.
Iran has also previously been blamed for attacks near its waters.
Last month, an Israeli-owned, Maltese-flagged cargo ship was struck in the Indian Ocean in a suspected drone attack by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, a US official said.
The attacks on ships, which began on October 7 following the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas, have prompted major companies to divert their cargo ships around Africa, although such trips are more expensive and take much longer.
