Victory in the sprint, victory in the pursuit, victory in the relay: Norway’s men dominated the biathlon World Cup races in Hochfilzen.
Norway, who else? The dominators of biathlon among men have won ten of the last eleven World Cup relays. And on Sunday in Hochfilzen the Norwegians also ran in a class of their own. Sturla Holm Laegreid, Tarjei and Johannes T. Boe as well as Vetle Sjastadt Christiansen were able to save their energy at the end and were 28 seconds ahead of France. Not even a broken stick during the last change might slow down the Scandinavians. The Germans came third. Incidentally, the pursuit race on Saturday resulted in a quadruple victory for the Norwegians, led by Johannes Boe. The team leader praised his colleagues: “This is simply a dream team.”
It was a success for the Austrians that they were even able to field a relay team at their home race. After Simon Eder and Magnus Oberhauser’s health-related cancellations, David Komatz even skipped the pursuit on Saturday due to back problems in order to be fit for the team. “Absolutely the right decision,” said the birthday child. Komatz turned 32 on Sunday. Dominic Unterweger, who had only arrived in Tyrol from Sweden on Saturday, had to step in. He was still in action at the IBU Cup. Felix Leitner and Patrick Jakob completed the quartet, which did not have high expectations given the circumstances. Sixth place would have been sensational and was within reach before Patrick Jakob picked up three penalties in the last shooting and fell back to eighth place (+4:23 minutes).
The women’s relay in Hochfilzen follows at 2:15 p.m.
