In a shocking event, the Kartel nightclub boat sank this Sunday morning in the waters of the Sava River, in Belgrade, with more than 100 people on board.
The authorities confirmed that all those attending the event were rescued but dozens of them received medical attention following jumping into the icy waters to save their lives.
A witness spoke to the Serbian media Informer and declared: “Everything happened in a second, the party was scheduled until 2:30, and it all ended at one. Suddenly, a couple of security guys got on the boat, in the crowd, and started kicking people out one by one, between 10 and 15, but they started complaining. The security guards did not react to their words and when they came out, a small conflict arose, a fight between them.”
“People began to get off the boat, all pushing each other, shouting, and they had already reached the middle of the wooden bridge, when it began to creak and the boat sank. Then there was an even greater scream and panic, and all those who were coming down fell into the water because they did not know that the bridge had broken, they fell on top of each other. Some didn’t even know how to swim, so they saved each other,” he added.
“I think that the boat was not stable enough, but that 80 percent of the stability was found in that bridge because when the bridge broke, the raft began to curve,” he concluded.
Emergency services received the first warnings shortly following midnight. Upon arrival, they found that the boat had begun to sink and they proceeded to evacuate all the people, reaching a total of 114, including minors.
The authorities are now trying to determine the causes of the event, although the first testimonies point to a fight prior to the sinking, according to the RTS channel.
The confluence between the Sava and Danube rivers is usually a recurring area for parties on boats docked in port areas and, in fact, on New Year’s Eve 2022 an event similar to this Sunday already occurred, also without victims.
