Is there an end in sight to the never-ending story of the professional regulation of social work?

Vienna (OTS) Am 17.4. The jointly organized event took place in the Vienna Chamber of Labor: “The (never)ending story of the professional law of social work”. With around 550 participants, a clear signal was given that social work and its professional regulations are of broad interest. The aim of the event was to create an overview and classification of social work in an international context and to discuss the importance of social work for the health of the population. The focus was on the question of professional law and how such law must be designed in order to achieve legal protection for professionals and the addressees of social work, but also for sponsors and employers.

Important steps on the way to the professional law

The one invited to the panel discussion Federal Minister for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection Johannes Rauch emphasized the importance of social work for the social and health system and also pointed out the lack of skilled workers in this area. Minister Rauch underscored his efforts to ensure occupational protection for social work “any social worker can call”. He also announced his support for ascertaining the actual need for skilled workers and training places.

The managing directors of the Austrian Professional Association of Social Work (obds)Julia Pollak and Gerlinde Blemenschitz-Kramer support this concern and see it as an important intermediate step on the way to the professional law. “We look forward to the next talks in the ministry on the subject and see professional protection for social workers as the first important step in order to regulate social work by law. With the description of the subject of social work, which was presented to the public for the first time today, we have presented a document that can point the way.”
