Some see a morning shower as a way to refresh and start the day, while others see a nighttime shower as a way to relax and unwind.
However, science disagrees with this practice. Founding Director Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the University of Toronto, recommends showering less regularly and washing only 3 parts of the body.
And showering a lot may do more harm to your skin than it does good, for example, it can dry out your skin, especially if you use an abrasive or soap, according to the American “Bright Side”.
On top of that, you can deplete important oils, fats and bacteria that help your skin fight inflammation, maintain a smooth texture and strengthen its protective barrier.
How often should you shower?
Showering every day is bad for you because it washes away the beneficial bacteria that live on your skin. And daily showering is not only harmful to the skin, but also to the hair.
Excessive shampooing can dry out your hair and dull its color. Thus, many dermatologists recommend showering every other day, or two to three times a week.
1- armpits
Washing your body from head to toe with soap and water can cause skin problems. However, it is essential to maintain thorough hygiene in the armpit area.
Dr. Sandy Skotnicki recommends a 3-step shower routine that includes washing your armpits instead of showering every day to avoid issues like eczema.
2- thigh
Another drawback to cleaning your entire body every day can be problems caused by bathing with salt and chemicals like chlorine, fluoride, and pesticides.
Hence, cleaning the groin area and other body parts may be sufficient. The groin, like the armpits, is more prone to ingrown hairs and fungi. To avoid infection, this part of the body should be washed daily.
3- foot
Washing your feet is an important part of a dermatologist-recommended 3-step bathing routine, as dirt builds up on your feet if you’re barefoot and moisture builds up in which bacteria thrive if you wear socks or shoes.
