Tegucigalpa, Jan 20 (EFE) .- The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Honduras announced this Thursday that it disqualified the elected deputy Roy Dagoberto Cruz, following confirming his relationship within the fourth degree of consanguinity with the president of the Supreme Court of Justice Rolando Argueta.
The electoral entity indicated in a statement that Cruz, a deputy of the National Party, now the first opposition force in Parliament, was disqualified “by a majority of votes” in compliance with article 199, number 10, of the Constitution of the Republic.
The CNE has already notified the National Congress of Cruz’s disqualification and asked the National Party to accredit his replacement in accordance with the provisions of the Honduran Electoral Law.
The Minister of the Interior, Justice and Decentralization, Leonel Ayala, who this Friday will lead the session of the Honduran Parliament in which a provisional board of directors will be elected, has also been informed of the decision.
The electoral body pointed out that Cruz, a deputy for the department of Copán, in western Honduras, filed an appeal with the Electoral Court of Justice (TJE) on an unspecified date, which was admitted, but so far no It has been resolved.
Cruz was elected deputy in the general elections on November 28, won by the presidential candidate Xiomara Castro, leader of the Libertad y Refundación (Libre, left) Party, who will not have a simple majority in the Legislative.
Castro, former first lady and wife of former president Manuel Zelaya, who was overthrown on June 28, 2009, is the first woman elected president of Honduras.
By law, the next session of Parliament will be installed on January 25, two days before Castro, 62, takes power and succeeds Juan Orlando Hernández, who will complete his second four-year term.
The Honduran Parliament today closed its 2018-2022 session by approving several bills, amid criticism from the opposition for considering that some are harmful to the people.
