A delegation from the Palestinian factions movement heads to Cairo, and Israeli talk of a “decisive” meeting tomorrow

Egypt – An informed Palestinian source reported that a delegation from the Palestinian factions movement will arrive in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Saturday afternoon, to discuss developments in the ongoing negotiations regarding the exchange of prisoners and the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The source, who preferred not to be named, said, “The movement’s delegation will arrive in Cairo this afternoon to meet with Egyptian officials and learn about the developments in the ongoing talks regarding a ceasefire in Gaza,” without further details.

The visit comes two days after an Israeli security delegation arrived in Cairo, in addition to an American delegation, to participate in the ceasefire talks, with negotiations expected to resume on Saturday or Sunday.

There is talk about the diminishing chances of success of the negotiations due to the insistence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on continuing the war on Gaza, and his insistence on maintaining military control over the Philadelphi border axes with Egypt, and the Netzarim corridor separating the north and south of the Strip.

In contrast, the factions’ movement insists on ending the war, the complete withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip, and the freedom of the displaced to return to their areas, as part of any prisoner exchange and ceasefire agreement.

There was no immediate comment from the movement confirming the delegation’s visit to Cairo today.

On August 15 and 16, the Qatari capital, Doha, hosted a round of talks on a ceasefire in Gaza and prisoner exchange. At the conclusion of the talks, the mediators announced that Washington had presented a new agreement proposal to reduce the gaps between Israel and the factions’ movement.

The factions movement considered that the American proposal meets Netanyahu’s conditions, especially his rejection of a permanent ceasefire and a comprehensive withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and his insistence on continuing to occupy the Netzarim Corridor, the Rafah Crossing, and the Philadelphi Corridor. He also set new conditions in the prisoner exchange file, and backed down from other items, which prevents the completion of the exchange deal.

On Wednesday, the factions’ movement confirmed their adherence to the resistance’s conditions for concluding any agreement with Israel, including a comprehensive cessation of the war on Gaza, a complete withdrawal of the Israeli army, the beginning of reconstruction of the Strip, and the end of its siege, along with the conclusion of a serious exchange deal.

Security officials, the opposition and families of Israeli prisoners accuse Netanyahu of obstructing an agreement for fear of collapsing his government and losing his position, as far-right ministers threaten to withdraw from it and topple it if it accepts an agreement to end the war.
