It is a portrait like all music lovers dream of, the one dedicated by the Les Musicales de Coppet association to the composer Johannes Brahms. This Sunday, October 1, the silhouette of the genius of Hamburg will emerge between the centuries-old walls of the castle of the Lake Geneva town and will be observed under some of its most prominent features. This musical adventure can be experienced in six stages and as many concerts, during “La Folle jour Brahms”. The event is entering its first edition.
The shadow of the Schumanns
The artistic direction of Véronique Vielle has imagined a course with clear lines. “It’s a kind of saga with program ideas constructed and designed to meet this great figure. The idea being to offer a succession of relatively short meetings. Each will be preceded by a short introduction. This approach aims to erase the intimidating traits that can be associated with classical music and its concerts.
What does this Lake Geneva Brahms tell us regarding him? He evokes the friendly ties which unite him with the couple Clara and Robert Schumann, first of all. A relationship where the shadow of adultery looms like a mystery. Pianist Mélodie Zhao will illustrate its dimensions by tackling “Variations on a Theme of Robert Schumann, op.9”, a piece which opens the door to Schumann and in particular to his “Quatre Fugitives, op.15”.
Other traits of Brahms can be discovered, through these two works created in Thun, during a refreshing stay: the “Piano Trio in C minor Nr. 3, op. 101” and the “Sonata for cello and piano Nr. 2”. At this stage we will find Raphaëlle Moreau, Estelle Revaz and Shani Diluka, three accomplices who regularly share the stage.

With the participation of violist Dor Sperber, these will also be part of the episode dedicated to Brahms imbued with gypsy culture, that of the “Quartet for piano and strings Nr. 1, op.25”. We must still appreciate some other peaks of the composer. How can we renounce the grace that runs through the “Quintet for piano and strings, op.34” from start to finish?
The Aviv Quartet and Mélodie Zhao cover the lines. The group established in Geneva will also be there to approach a late piece, the “Quintet for clarinet and strings, op.115”, in the company of Dmitry Rasul-Kareyev. Finally, there is Brahms and his love of voices: we will see him through a choice of Lieder, mirrored with pieces by Schubert. Everything will be embodied by the mezzo Carine Séchaye and the pianist Fanny Monnet.
