This Saturday, March 4 is the day chosen by all stakeholders on the issue of obesity to unify their action and encourage all audiences to carry the same mobilization theme: “Let’s talk regarding obesity, together we can change the story of obesity for a happier, healthier and longer life”. In Guadeloupe, it is the esplanade of the port of Basse-Terre which hosts the events organized for this purpose.

To understand the importance of such a day in Guadeloupe, it is first necessary to highlight the figures which underline the reality of obesity in the Archipelago.
Indeed, if 39% of adults in the world are overweight and 13% obese, in Guadeloupe, 1 in 2 adults is overweight or obese. The prevalence of obesity of 23% of the population once morest 15% in France.
Among children aged 5 to 14, the prevalence of obesity is just as worrying, reaching 9% once morest 3.5% in France.
But we must immediately add that, contrary to popular belief, the causes of obesity are multiple. The GIP-Raspeg, which federates in Guadeloupe the actions carried out within the framework of World Obesity Day, recalls that:
Obesity corresponds to an excess of fatty mass leading to disadvantages for health and which can reduce life expectancy. It results from the intertwining of several factors: dietary, psychological, genetic epigenetic, and environmental involved in the development and progression of this chronic disease.
This, Charlene knows. Charlène is a young Guadeloupean aged 28 today. Her weight gain began in 2013 when she left for higher education in France.
Over the years, she gained weight, until the day she reached 117 kilos on the scale, or severe obesity.
After trying all the diets without success, Charlène opts for surgery. In April 2021, she had surgery, a sleeve that would radically change her life.
But this nightmare from which Charlène was able to recover, many must compose their daily life with him. And like Charlène, they have to overcome the little tolerant gaze of others.
A concern that GIP-Raspeg has placed at the heart of the program organized in Basse-Terre.
As of yesterday, a webinar on the “Management of patients suffering from obesity beyond BMI” had enabled health professionals to learn regarding topics related to the management of obesity, particularly on instead of drug treatment. They were also able to hear testimonies on the consequences of fatphobia on the health of obese people.
And this Saturday, in addition to the informative stands on the theme of “taking care of yourself and strengthening your self-esteem”, but also medical presentations on balanced diet, managing stress with cardiac coherence, physical activities are also included in the program with, in particular, the “Wake up your body” concept by Steeve Segor,
