A data center chooses Quebec for its climate

The cold of the Quebec winter is sought following by companies in the field of computing and data protection.

It is also for this reason, among others, that the Vantage company decided to invest more in the province, which is already well established in Quebec and Montreal.

“It’s cold. Year round, the temperature is colder. So that allows us not to use electricity to cool the rooms. At the moment, the units are not running, do not consume electricity, because precisely, we can use the external temperature to cool the interior of our rooms”, mentions the president and general manager of Vantage, Maxime Guérin.

In addition to the climate, the Vantage CEO says two other reasons tipped the scales.

The environment is also one of the aspects that helps Quebec do well in attracting businesses and customers.

“Hydro-Québec produces 99.6% of its green energy. So it’s green energy. It is very attractive for companies like us, which are already positioned to become carbon neutral by 2030. Electricity costs are lower in Quebec and operating a data center like that, with a lot of capacity, you will understand that it has a direct impact on our operating costs, which are lower”, underlines the CEO.

The growing demand for its services during the pandemic forced Vantage to expand and build a new data center that required an investment of 900 million.

“We are very proud of it. It represents 150% growth in the physical capacity we have today. It is to meet demand. With COVID, we have experienced an increase in these requests. We can think of all the employees who have been working from home since the start of the pandemic,” he said.
