“Our study shows that a 41% increase in magnesium intake might cause a reduction in age-related brain shrinkagewhich is associated with better cognitive function and lower risk or delayed onset of dementia later in life,” said lead author and Ph.D. researcher Khawlah Alateeq. , from the ANU National Center for Population Epidemiology and Health.
“This research highlights the potential benefits ofa diet rich in magnesium and the role it plays in promoting good brain health,” he added.
Researchers therefore call for increasing your magnesium intake every day, from an early age, in order to protect yourself once morest neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline.
“We also found that the neuroprotective effects of more dietary magnesium appear to benefit women more than men and more so in postmenopausal women than in pre-menopausal women, although this may be due to the anti-inflammatory effect of magnesium”, adds the researcher.
