‘A Cup of Tea’ with British Pakistani Rapper Billy Khan

In the second episode of Independent Urdu’s podcast “A Cup of Tea Crossing Cultures” we meet young British Pakistani rapper Billy Khan who specializes in making and singing freestyle songs.

In a podcast recorded in London, Billy Khan said that he inherited the art of singing from his mother of Pakistani origin who is well versed in Punjabi music. Although he himself cannot speak Urdu or Punjabi, he sang English songs while sitting on the Urdu words given by the hosts during the podcast.

In the podcast, hosts Mim Shaikh and Ali Hamza asked Billy Khan why he didn’t use his real name, and the participants concluded that people growing up in the UK sometimes have to use English abbreviations for English speakers, such as Billy. Khan’s real name is Bilal Khan, while host Mim Sheikh’s real name is Manwar Sheikh.
