In Senegal, the legal drama between Ousmane Sonko and the Senegalese State has just experienced a new twist. A judge ordered, Thursday, December 14 in Dakar, the reinstatement of the imprisoned opponent on the electoral lists, relaunching his candidacy for the presidential election in February 2024.

He confirmed a judgment rendered in October which had been overturned by the Supreme Court in mid-November. This decision puts the opponent back in the race who had been removed from the lists following being sentenced to two years in prison in June in a morals case.

He now has until December 26 to submit his application and collect sponsorship.

Decision with immediate effect

Some supporters of Ousmane Sonko gathered in the court welcomed this news with jubilation, chanting the opponent’s name.

One of his lawyers, Me Ciré Clédor Ly, affirmed that the State might file an appeal before the Supreme Court, but that “this appeal is not suspensive”. “The electoral code is very clear. When the judge makes his decision, this decision must be immediately executed,” he assured.

Ousmane Sonko was imprisoned at the end of July on other charges, including calling for insurrection, criminal association in connection with a terrorist enterprise and endangering state security.
