Born in 1995, after losing both her parents, this little girl’s life became a real nightmare. She had to face many difficulties and overcome several trials during her stay at the orphanage. She suffered from vitiligo, a progressive depigmentation of the skin that results in white spots all around her neck. This earned him ridicule and criticism from his local community in Sierra Leone.
Around her, the young children were mocking and aggressive. She was often told that she was “ ugly “, that no one would want her and that she had no chance of being adopted. Michaela Deprince even claims that she was given a label: she was called “ the devil’s child “. So much so that she herself continued to devalue herself and believe that she was a monster. “ They used to rank us in the orphanage, number 1 being the favorite child and number 27 being the least favorite… I was number 27 », she says, still disturbed by this painful past. Traumatized by the mistreatment she suffered on a daily basis, Michaela sometimes slept entire nights with an empty stomach. She saw no hope on the horizon and her dark thoughts continued to multiply. The months passed with difficulty, her classmates were adopted and she remained desperately on the sidelines. However, in her misfortune, one day, she found a smile again. By chance, she came across a photo of a ballerina in a magazine. Captivated by this image, she immediately wanted to one day resemble this beautiful and happy prima ballerina. “ I was fascinated by this woman, not only because she was a ballerina, but also because she looked really happy. In fact, it was mainly that, it was his happiness that made my eyes shine. I wanted to be as happy as her. And, I said to myself: ‘if ballet made her this happy, that’s what I would like to do when I grow up!’ “, she confided.

When Michaela was finally adopted by an American couple in 1999, she immediately expressed her wish to become a prima ballerina one day. Her adoptive parents, who had unfortunately lost three children, were so happy to have her in their lives that they were ready to make all her dreams come true. Of course, at the beginning, after her painful past, it took time for the little girl to trust them, to find her bearings and to adapt to her new home. But, thanks to the affection and kindness of her new parents, Elaine DePrince and her husband, Michaela gradually tasted a new life. They showered her with so much love that her wounds began to heal.
