At the end of September, parents-to-be decided to reveal the sex of their child by coloring the water of a waterfall in the state of Mato Grosso blue, reported the “Washington Post”.
The video was shared on social media before being deleted due to widespread criticism.
The environmental issue has caused a lot of concern to Internet users and experts. “There are so many ways to have a gender reveal party, and they chose the one that impacts the environment,” one forest engineer tweeted.
According to the regional agency for environmental protection (SEMA), the waterfall flows into a river that supplies drinking water to a city of 100,000 inhabitants, which has been suffering from severe droughts for several years.
After the video was posted on social media, SEMA began analysis procedures.
“No changes were observed in the water parameters,” she said. One of the organizers would also have indicated to a local media not to have used chemicals, according to the “20 minutes”.
Despite the likely minimal risks to the environment, the couple might face legal action, and the fine might range from around $1,340 to $13,400.
