There are significant parts of Indian history that have been removed from school curricula, which is being vigorously repressed, denouncing censorship directed particularly against the Muslim component of the country, in line with the policies of the ruling Hindu nationalists.

The National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has arbitrarily and stealthily removed several parts of textbooks, which shows a lack of professionalism and bad faith. The ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has placed the creation of a new ecosystem of knowledge in all fields at the heart of its policy.

The Indian Board of Education claims to want to lighten textbooks to facilitate educational recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the cut appears to be selective: violent acts committed by Hindus affiliated with the ruling party, such as the assassination of Gandhi in the 1940s or the anti-Muslim pogroms of 2002, are toned down. Above all, a whole part of Mughal and Muslim history, which spans several centuries, has been erased, reports Franceinfo.

According to historians, this is obscurantism because the medieval period of the Mughals is considered India’s cultural renaissance, during which architectural marvels such as the Taj Mahal were built, and where India’s own syncretism settled for the ancient religious broth that makes up the country today.
