A connected tree litters Place de la Liberté in Delémont

In our ultra-digitalized society, even trees are becoming connected. The City of Delémont is participating in a pilot project orchestrated by the University of Landscape, Engineering and Architecture of Geneva. The objective is to fight for the health of the trees. To do this, the lime tree in Place de la Liberté was fitted with a sensor. Its purpose is to detect any problems with the state of health of the tree and then send the data to a mobile application. Thanks to this information, it will be possible to quickly deal with any problems that the tree may encounter. Dehydration, fungi and all other problems are detectable via this instrument.

“The idea would be to equip certain trees” if the project is conclusive according to Valentine Heimann, nature and landscape manager for the City of Delémont. Equipping them all with this technology would not be possible, since “this system is quite expensive”, she admits. It would therefore be necessary to target strategic places to collect this data, such as trees present in urban centers. Obviously, nothing has yet been decided at the City level. Everything will depend on the results collected in the ten cities participating in this pilot project. All data will be presented by the end of the year. /lge
