A Comprehensive Review of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PC Version – Technical Glitches and Performance Analysis

2023-08-02 14:55:34
After its release two years exclusively on the PS5 platform, the PC version of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart has finally been released, and as is the case with Marvel’s Spider-Man and Miles Morales, the game is developed by the creative Insomniac studio while the PC version is customized by the talented Nixxes team. Therefore, I expected to get a great experience like the previous two games, especially since my computer hardware barely touches the requirements of running the game at the lowest possible graphic settings. I was really excited to try the game as compensation for the bitter experience I got with the PC version of The Last of Us Part I, and I wanted to give Sony exclusives another chance, perhaps to change my view that the studios are no longer polishing the experience enough following Spider-Man. Unfortunately, the game only worked for an hour, following which it became unplayable due to a bunch of weird technical glitches! Therefore, I will only touch on the technical side because the game did not leave me room to touch on something else. The technology behind Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart heralded a “not in dreams” experience! The other thing that deceived my ambitions in the smoothness of the experience, other than that Nixxes dedicated the PC version of the game, is the number of technologies and settings that any player dreams of having in a way that deserves praise and a really warm applause, and I do not mean here only the DitectStorage technology, as there are other technologies that I am glad to have. We show them as follows: Image Credit: TechPowerUp There is a Setup window that allows you to adjust the graphic settings before launching the game, which is an excellent thing for owners of weak computers to make sure that the appropriate settings are set in order to avoid technical problems within the game, and the graphic settings within the game can also be modified immediately and easily. A wide range of graphical settings can be controlled individually for each setting, the most important of which are textures, shadows, depth of field (DoF), detail range, traffic density, hair quality, reflections quality, weather details, FoV, and blur. Motion Blur. Image Credit: GameGPU All upscaling technology enabled; DLSS 3.0 from Nvidia, FSR 2.1 from AMD, XeSS from Intel, even IGTI from Insomniac, something that rarely happens in games. There are several anti-aliasing technologies to choose from; SMAA, TAA, and DLAA, knowing that the latter is from Nvidia and is activated automatically when DLSS technology is activated, since it is basically one of the parts of the latter technology, while the other part is raising the resolution. Support for Dynamic Resolution Scaling, VSync to control frame rate, and Nvidia Reflex Low Latency to reduce controller lag. Image Credit: GameGPU Hardware ray tracing is fully supported whether it is for reflections, shadows or ambient occlusion. The game supports full customization of the control buttons, whether on the keyboard, mouse, or controller, knowing that there are exclusive settings for the DualSense controller, and the game also supports synchronization and conversion between different control tools without any problems. What does the game experience look like from a technical point of view? Nixxes studio has a good reputation for customizing Sony games for PC, which is reason enough for any gamer who loves Sony exclusives to buy it without hesitation. Since it is exclusive to the new generation, the game supports DirectStorage technology that takes advantage of the capabilities of the NVMe M.2 SSD storage units to reduce the loading time of the game world, which improves its performance, and although the Insomniac studio confirmed that the SSD units are prerequisites for running the game, it is playable with HDD units too, but with a performance difference of course. Image Credit: Eurogamer Regarding the game’s technical experience, there are many graphical defects, some of which were resolved in an update released days following the game’s launch, while others still remain. Among these defects is the absence of some transparency effects and overexposing them, in addition to dimming colors, loss of detail, problems related to structure, and inconsistency of shadows with their bodies reflected from them, and unfortunately for owners of AMD cards, the game does not support ray tracing for these cards unlike Nvidia cards, except for disasters The other technology that we will show later. Image Credit: Eurogamer All these unjustified defects make the game experience via the PC, whatever its specifications, unsatisfactory compared to the PS5 platform. If you look closely at the previous two images, you will find a noticeable difference in the amount of detail, color accuracy, and the sharpness of the elements. However, we find points of superiority for the PC platform, including the clarity and stability of ray-tracing reflections compared to the PS5 platform, the lack of “ghosting” for “Upscaling” techniques, and finally the smoothness of the edges for “Anti-Aliasing” techniques. Auditions: Are we in front of a new The Last of Us Part I? The opinions of PC users varied regarding the technical performance of the game, regardless of the specifications of their computers. Some of them described the experience as great, and some of them described it as terrible, but it is agreed that the economic category of gaming computers suffers in running the game. But according to an average Meta Critic user rating of 4.2 out of 10, the game’s technical performance is underwhelming, if not catastrophic. We will show you the performance of the game through three test platforms, the first of which is from the economic category, the second from the middle category, and the third from the high category, noting that all test platforms are running Windows 11, and contain M.2 NVMe SSD storage units, and Nvidia graphics cards. These cards carry the latest version of Game Ready software, and finally the power is set to “Performance” mode. Here are the platforms: Economy Class PC: Image Credit: PC Gamer Processor: Intel Core i5-9300H. Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. RAM: 8GB at 2666MHz. The game ran at 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution and the lowest possible graphics settings with AMD FSR 2.1 technology activated in performance mode, and the game suffered a noticeable drop in frame rate in cinematic scenes, as well as when moving between the gates of the worlds. The game ran fine for the first hour, following which severe technical issues started to appear. The progress of the game stopped at 2% for no reason, as I was locked inside a certain stage and I might not move the camera or use weapons, and when I tried to go back to any save point prior to this stage, the game was passing the list of save points automatically, so I had no choice but to restart the game from the beginning . Then the game began to freeze and close following only five minutes, and whenever I restarted it, the sound was temporarily muted before it closed once more, to show a window offering to send a complaint to Sony, then I tried to set the frame rate at 30 frames, but all attempts failed and I might not play once more. Mid-range PC: Image Credit: PC Gamer Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 5600. Graphics Card: Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8GB. RAM: 16GB at 3200MHz. The game ran at an average of 60 frames per second at 1440p resolution and at an average of 30 frames per second at 4K resolution at High settings and without activating DLSS technology, and we did not encounter many problems – I mean disasters – with regard to technical performance except for a few various technical problems related to graphics, sound and gameplay from time to time , but in general we can say that the experience this time is somewhat satisfactory. High-end PC: Image Credit: PC Gamer Processor: Intel Core i9-13900K. Graphics Card: Nvidia RTX 4090 24GB RAM: 32GB at 6000MHz. The game ran at 105 frames per second in 4K resolution and 180 frames per second in 1440p resolution at the highest possible graphic settings, and when ray tracing technology was activated, the frame rate dropped to 70 frames and 105 frames in the same order mentioned above, yes the numbers are really great, but what do you expect of these specifications? We’re not messing around here, my friend! It is strange that most of the aforementioned technical performance problems did not appear here as if they did not exist in the first place, with the exception of some graphics defects and a slight slow loading of screens on the PS5 platform, although the balance of hardware forces tends in favor of the computer here. Technical Features of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart: Great visual experience with HD graphics that truly represents the new generation! Easily control display and graphics settings before launching the game and during gameplay. Freedom to control a wide range of graphics and display settings individually for each setting. Support for all “Upscaling” techniques, which is rare in games, as well as support for “Ray Tracing” technology. Providing full customization of the various control tools and allowing them to be operated at the same time, as we have become accustomed to from Sony recently. Unlimited frame rate and DirectStorage support ensure an ultra-smooth experience. Technical flaws of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart: The game is not playable on economy class gaming PCs even though it meets minimum settings requirements. The game is not without technical defects, no matter how high the computer specifications are, which requires updates to solve these problems as soon as possible. I find no justification for making the experience across the PS5 platform better at some points than the most powerful computers on the market! Is Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart Worth Buying? The price of the game is $ 60, which is definitely not an easy price, and despite the aforementioned technical defects, once it is resolved with subsequent updates, the game will be a good deal, especially if you try the previous part on the PS4 platform. But if you did not try the previous part, I advise you to borrow the platform from your friend, for example, before you buy the Rift Apart part in order to avoid colliding with the events of the story as happened to me, and in all cases it is preferable not to try the game until following technical problems are resolved so that you do not feel frustrated with the game. Review Summary Graphics – 9 Audio – 10 Loading Screen Time – 9 Technical Performance – 5 Customization – 9.5 8.5 Excellent Despite being customized for PC by Nixxes, Sony once once more did not escape the curse of technical defects at launch, and missed a golden opportunity to make up for the disastrous launch of The Last. of UsPart I! However, the game offers a nice experience, it just lacks to solve technical problems with later updates to be a masterpiece worthy of the PC!
