A Community Grieves Together: Honoring a Mother and Her Three Daughters Taken by Conflict

Seven civilians were killed and more than 50 injured in a drone and missile strike on a residential area of ​​the city of Lviv on Wednesday. Among the dead were Yevgenia Basilevich, 43, and her three daughters Yarina, 21, Daria, 18, and Emilia, 7.

A choir accompanied with mournful chants the procession formed by the relatives as they carried the coffins to the church. Many in the crowd held sunflowers – some wore traditional Ukrainian shirts.

Their father, Yaroslav Basilevich, 48, wept and hugged people passing by the open white coffins of his three daughters and his wife, his face covered in cuts and bruises he suffered during the attack.

“I have never met such people in my life,” said Oleksandra Petriuk, a close friend of one of the older sisters, holding a bouquet of chrysanthemums as she could not hold back her tears outside the church.

“I don’t understand why it has to be so unfair. Why must their illustrious family die like this? For what reason? Why them?”

Russia denies it is deliberately targeting civilians, although its forces have killed thousands of them during the full-scale invasion, which Moscow launched in February 2022. Russia regularly strikes targets across Ukraine far from its line of front, saying it is hurting Ukraine’s ability to fight by destroying its infrastructure.
